When a face kiosk is the right choice

How it works
- Install the kiosk app on an Android tablet and sign in as an admin for the site.
- Register each employee's face with guided capture from several angles, after recording their consent.
- Employees look at the tablet to check in or check out; the result appears on screen with their name and photo.
- Punches are stored on the tablet first and synced to the server in the background, where shift, late-mark and overtime rules are applied.
- HR sees the punches in the attendance register and payroll picks them up at month end.
Safeguards
One face, one employee
If two or more faces are in the frame, the scan is blocked instead of guessing who is punching.
Ambiguous-match rejection
When a face is too close to two registered employees, the kiosk refuses the match rather than risk a wrong punch.
Duplicate-registration check
A face that closely matches an already-registered employee is flagged at registration.
Geo-fence
Optionally restrict the kiosk to a site radius; mocked or inaccurate locations are blocked.
Idempotent sync
Each punch has a unique event ID and device sequence number, so a retried sync never creates a duplicate record.
Encrypted templates
Face templates are encrypted on the device and on the server; registration requires the employee's recorded consent.
Multi-site and multi-device
Each tablet gets a unique device identity and reports a heartbeat, so admins can see which kiosks are online and which app version they run. A kiosk only holds the roster of its own employer, and each site can run its own kiosks under one account.
An on-device report lets site admins export the day's or month's punches even when the server cannot be reached.
Consent and privacy
Face data is personal data. The kiosk asks for and records consent before registration, stores templates encrypted, and uses them only for attendance. Employers remain responsible for informing employees and following the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 in their own policies.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special hardware?
No. The kiosk runs on a regular Android tablet with a front camera. A floor stand or wall mount at face height gives the best results.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Recognition and punch recording happen on the tablet. Punches sync automatically when the connection returns.
Can one tablet serve a large workforce?
The kiosk keeps the site's roster on the tablet so recognition works offline. For large shift changes, place more than one tablet at the entrance to avoid queues.
